The gift of imagination is something we all share – but what we do with it during the course of our daily lives is what separates those who are passively creative from others who consistently take risks to experience the temperature “outside the box.”
Many have made the unconscious decision to separate active imagination from the reality of daily responsibilities. There’s no question that it’s easier to steer down the same path during everyday activities, never questioning the why and how of a particular endeavor. That old saying “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” carries a lot of weight…but it can also be a heavy burden. There’s nothing wrong with having a comfort zone in your day-to-day, but you might experience both comfort and joy if you mix things up a little.
All too often, imagination is associated with the innocence of youth…or looked upon as something that should only be put into use during free time, when the “must do’s” of the day have been crossed off the list. That’s a shame.
And then there are those who have carved out credibility as a “creative” person; someone whose work gives them permission to explore their imagination. Often, those in this category are scrutinized and even judged for choosing such an unpredictable path….and that’s another shame.
We all have the capacity to create – simply by opening our minds to an alternative framework and venturing away from our “normal.” Regularly tapping into possibilities can be the key to more fulfilling experiences and ultimately to more satisfying lives.
“Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something. It seemed obvious to them after a while.” – Steve Jobs
